Dive Brief:
- Wawa opened a c-store in the lower level of the Connelly Center at Villanova University in Villanova, Pennsylvania, company officials shared on LinkedIn.
- The store carries Wawa’s “full food, beverage and convenience options,” according to a report from student newspaper The Villanovan.
- This is not Wawa’s first foray onto college campuses. Two years ago, the retailer piloted a store featuring kiosk-only ordering on the campus of Drexel University.
Dive Insight:
Wawa has made headlines in recent years for its big expansion plans, but its on-campus c-stores show it’s also still exploring new formats and approaches including a drive-thru location, modular construction sites and a travel center.
The industry could see an increase in university locations in the coming decade. With college and university enrollment expected to flatten in the next few years and fewer students taking part in meal plans, according to a recent Technomic report, on-campus c-stores could play a big part in the changing campus dining dynamic. While some campuses are using advanced technology to automate stores, Wawa offers an alternative built around a strong brand.
The Wawa will accept not only cash and card payments, but also Villanova’s on-campus currencies, Nova Bucks and Points.
“The improvements to dining, study and lounge options will ensure the building is equipped to best serve Villanova students today and in the future,” University President Rev. Peter M. Donohue told The Villanovan.
The new Wawa is part of a broader renovation at the Connelly Center, which serves as a student gathering place and offers other amenities like meeting and event space, lounges and foodservice options.
