There’s no avoiding talk of M&A around the c-store industry. While Alimentation Couche-Tard’s mega-deal for 7-Eleven parent company Seven & i Holdings has fallen through, the industry’s appetite for consolidation remains strong.
There have been some big shifts. Couche-Tard closed its purchase of GetGo Cafe + Market in June after divesting 35 stories to appease the Securities and Exchange Commission. Those stores were picked up by Majors Management, which will introduce its MAPCO brand to three new states.
Additionally, energy firm Sunoco has agreed to buy Parkland Corp, including all its retail sites in the U.S.,Canada and the Caribbean.
Regional players have been selling tranches of stores that don’t fit their mission. Stinker Stores, Maverik and Yesway have all put a selection of sites on the block.
And as predicted by experts earlier this year, many smaller players are exiting the industry as pressures mount and bigger competitors look to expand. Casey’s General Stores picking up Wow! Foodmart’s 12 locations, Pri Mar Petroleum selling its retail footprint to Blarney Castle Oil and Good Oil Company nabbing Big Mike’s Gas N Go are just three examples.
