- Convenience retailer Spinx Co. has applied to build a new alternative format, fuel-free store in Greenville, South Carolina that focuses on grocery items in addition to its standard c-store products, according to a design application with the City of Greenville.
- The proposed store will also feature made-to-order food prepared, similar to other Spinx locations, as well as limited beer and wine to be consumed on-site, according to the application.
- Spinx hopes to build patios at both the front and back entrances, as well as a new parking lot at the rear of the 25,000-square-foot property. The new store would aim to serve both pedestrian traffic and nearby downtown residents.

With Americans driving less and electric vehicles growing in popularity, c-stores are increasingly trying formats that not only focus on prepared foods and premium merchandise, but are gasoline-free as well. Retailers like QuikTrip, 7-Eleven and Kum & Go have already tapped into this trend, and Spinx appears to be next in line.
The location that Spinx is looking to retrofit previously housed a restaurant and kitchen appliances shop. By adding the patios, Spinx hopes to increase on-site consumption of its food and beverages, according to the application.
Bryan Zeiger, vice president of alternative formats for the convenience retailer, confirmed that Spinx was planning this location, but declined to comment further until the company receives the necessary design approvals.
“Though it is an existing building, we are renovating it to increase activity on the site,” according to the application, which was filled out by Zeiger. “Green spaces will be added on the rear of the building, and pedestrian connectivity to the adjacent properties will be improved.”
The updates would also feature a grassy open space and children’s play area between the proposed rear parking and accessible ramp, according to the application. Spinx is also looking to include bike racks to encourage alternative modes of transportation.
Founded in 1972, Greenville-based Spinx operates 82 c-stores throughout the Carolinas.
