Dive Brief:
- Convenience retailing software provider PDI Technologies has acquired the merchant point-of-sale business of Comdata, a fuel cards and payment acceptance vendor, for an undisclosed amount, the companies announced this week.
- The deal includes Comdata’s POS hardware, software and systems that enable transactions at truck stops and unattended commercial fueling locations. PDI will now become an approved provider of Comdata transactions across its own PDI-branded POS solutions, according to the announcement.
- PDI, whose technology is used at over 200,000 c-stores globally, is looking to make its POS software more efficient and comprehensive through the acquisition, Brad McGuinness, senior vice president and general manager of POS solutions for PDI, said in the announcement.
Dive Insight:
PDI’s current POS retail solution is an all-in-one platform that offers cloud-centric POS, self-checkout and foodservice capabilities. It’s now expanding its capabilities with Comdata’s POS systems, which are designed for the attended and unattended over-the-road trucking industry.
“We see immense potential in both the exceptional technology and the deeply knowledgeable people at Comdata Merchant Solutions, and we look forward to adding them to our growing portfolio and team,” McGuinness said in a statement.
Comdata, which is owned by global business payments and spend management firm Corpay, will retain its truck stop payment acceptance network. This includes the fuel cards it issues to trucking companies and the technology that accepts transactions at truck stop retailers.
“We know PDI will support and enhance the POS part of the business, while we remain the card issuer and merchant acceptance provider moving forward,” Comdata President Randy Morgan said in the announcement.
The deal marks PDI’s fourth acquisition since the start of 2023 as the company continues to strengthen its software. TThe company acquired Blue Cow Software, LLC, a fuel oil and propane management software business, in February 2023, and followed that up by purchasing fellow c-store solutions provider Skupos and its CPG brand programs later in the year. This past summer, PDI acquired Nuspire, a managed security services provider.
