Dive Brief:
- EG America will soon roll out a limited-time $5 meal package across its convenience store network, according to a company announcement.
- The deal includes any two roller grill items or two cheese or pepperoni pizza slices; a one liter bottle of Pepsi, Mountain Dew, Aquafina or Brisk; and a bag of Lay’s, Miss Vickies, Ruffles or Sun Chips.
- EG’s latest promotion is one of the many ways c-store retailers have evolved their foodservice offerings this year as the industry looks to narrow the gap with QSRs and fast-food restaurants.
Dive Insight:
EG isn’t the only U.S. retailer that has launched a $5 meal special this year. In January, Arko Corp. — parent of GPM Investments — debuted frozen pizzas at 1,000 of its stores, at a price of $4.99 for loyalty members.
EG’s new $5 meal deal will become available June 19 and run through Sept. 3, according to the announcement. It’s only available at stores that offer roller grill and pizza products, and customers cannot combine the two in their purchase.
While c-stores have been competing with restaurants for years, the industry has leveled up its efforts in 2024. Over the past few months, some retailers have launched or expanded their own in-house food programs, while others have forged new QSR partnerships.
“As major fast food chains like McDonald’s and Burger King introduce $5 meal deals to win back customers in a food landscape impacted by inflation, convenience stores, which have upgraded their food offerings in recent years, are going toe-to-toe by offering their own equivalents,” a spokesperson from EG America said in the announcement.
Blackburn, U.K.-based EG Group currently has more than 5,500 c-stores across the U.S., U.K. and Ireland, Europe and Australia. EG America is EG Group’s largest operation globally, with 1,500-plus sites across 10 banners in 30 states, including Cumberland Farms, Fastrac, Kwik Shop and Tom Thumb.
