Over the past few months, Buc-ee’s customers and employees have taken to social media to show how much the convenience store retailer pays its staff. Turns out, it’s a lot more than the average c-store.
At a Buc-ee’s outside of San Antonio, Texas, cashiers, gift, maintenance, warehouse and grocery crew members are paid $18 per hour, according to a customer’s July 16 picture that was verified by C-Store Dive. Restroom crew members are paid $20 per hour, while foodservice and car wash staff earn $21 per hour.
Team leads at this store earn between $20 and 23 per hour, while department managers are paid between $25 and $33 per hour. Assistant foodservice managers — the highest-paid hourly employees at this Buc-ee’s — earn anywhere from $33 to $42 per hour.
Buc-ee’s hourly wages can differ from state to state. At its store in Leeds, Alabama, the retailer pays cashier, gift, maintenance warehouse and grocery staff $16 per hour, while foodservice and car wash employees make $19 per hour, according to a LinkedIn post earlier this year from Shelly Matthews, who works on Buc-ee’s corporate human resources team.
Team leads and department managers at this location are paid between $18 and $21 per hour, and $23 and $31 per hour, respectively.
Minimum wage for hourly employees in Texas and Alabama is $7.25 per hour, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.
Buc-ee’s did not respond by press time to an inquiry for how much it pays employees across the company.
An impressive pay display
Despite the differences in hourly wages, both the San Antonio and Leeds Buc-ee’s pay salaried staff the same.
Buc-ee’s full-time employees begin with its assistant general managers, who earn a salary of between $100,000 and $150,000, according to both posts. Car wash managers start at a salary of $125,000, while foodservice managers are paid anywhere between $125,000 and $175,000. Finally, general managers — Buc-ee’s highest-paid salaried store employees — make between $150,000 and $225,000.
Buc-ee’s wages far exceed what most convenience store employees in the U.S. earn. According to NACS’ 2022 State of the Industry Compensation Report, the average hourly wage for a full-time c-store associate was $14.33, while part-time associates averaged $13.76.
As labor challenges continue to plague convenience retailers, operators need to stay competitive when it comes to wages to hire and retain employees, experts say. Besides Buc-ee’s, retailers like Weigel’s and Pilot Co. have increased their wages over the past few years to retain employees and attract new ones.
Founded in Texas in 1982, Lake Jackson, Texas-based Buc-ee’s operates 46 stores across Texas, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee and South Carolina. The retailer has plans in place to expand to new markets such as Colorado, Louisiana, Missouri, Wisconsin and Virginia in the coming years.
